Stream: The Well’s heavy sophomore album Pagan Science

The Austin doomy psych trio turns in a furiously strong sophomore effort

RidingEasy Records has quickly become a haven for modern heavy psych and doomy rock ‘n roll, and as one of the label’s first bands, The Well played a major role in building that reputation. The Austin trio’s debut album, Samsara, dropped in 2014 and they toured on it relentlessly before returning to rural Texas to work on new material. Those songs would eventually become Pagan Science, set for release this Friday, October 14th, via RidingEasy. Ahead of the official due date, you can stream the whole thing below.

Pagan Science sees a maturation in both composition and recording for The Well, featuring denser production that better captures the powerful sonic breadth of their live show and the dueling vocals of Lisa Alley and Ian Graham. Rockers like lead singles “Black Eyed Gods” and “Drug From the Banks” retain the raw grooves and massive riffs that made Samsara so satisfying, but the studio goodies and tasty reverb treatments truly blossom when the band is in full-on psych mode, channeling Brazos Valley mysticism and ghosts of the stoned ’70s. We tapped it as one of our most anticipated heavy albums of 2016 for a reason.

The record is available for pre-order now from the RidingEasy website. For all the beer drinkers who sip while they listen, you can even get the Pagan Science IPA, a special brew prepared for the album’s release by Oliver Brewing Co. You can also catch the band soon when they join Mondo Drag and Crypt Trip for a stacked tour through the upper Midwest and East Coast; find those dates beneath the stream
