Tom Ford made an immediate impression on the film world in 2009 with his first feature A Single Man, and he’s now following that ornate, haunting neo-period piece with something a little more lurid in Nocturnal Animals.
The film’s initial trailer, dropped around the time of its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, teased audiences with its story of a haunted, affluent woman (Amy Adams) whose ex (Jake Gyllenhaal) sends her a draft of a screenplay he dedicated to her, and she’s left to work out whether it’s some kind of cryptic statement about their time together, or a possible threat. Now, the film’s second trailer highlights the relationship between Adams and Gyllenhaal, as its collapse threatens to destroy lives. Fusing the stylistic affectations that’ve come to define Ford’s work in fashion with the kind of sweltering rural grit that’s become a favorite of modern noir, Nocturnal Animals looks to be the kind of film that’ll frustrate and enrapture in equal measure, if the early reviews are any indication.
Also starring Michael Shannon, Isla Fisher, Armie Hammer, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nocturnal Animals will be released on November 18th.
