Nearly 20 years ago, Fiona Apple took to the stage at the 1997 MTV VMAs to accept her Best New Artist award and proved she wasn’t afraid to make bold public statements. Blurting out, “This world is bullshit,” she encouraged listeners to “go with yourself” instead of following what celebrities think is cool. Two decades later, and the reclusive singer is proving as outspoken as ever with a new message for President-Elect Donald Trump.
In a new video posted to her Tumblr page, Apple sings a satirical version of Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song”. With a barking dog in the background, the song’s message is clear with the opening line, “Trump’s nuts roasting on an open fire.” The parody calls out our incoming POTUS for his numerous sexual assault allegations (“You’ll cry creepy uncle every time he arrives/ For he keeps clawing at your clothes”) and racism (“Mothers of color with their kids out of sight/ Will find it hard to sleep at night”) before giving closing out with a direct, “Donald Trump, fuck you.”
