Good things come to those who wait. And, unfortunately, we’re going to be waiting a long time for the very good thing that will be the second season of FX’s Atlanta. Donald Glover’s innovative and hilarious series was one of 2016’s best, but today the network revealed his conflicts in the film world mean we won’t see Paper Boi and friends until 2018.
As we’ve previously reported, Glover is playing Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Star Wars anthology film centering around Han Solo. It begins shooting this month, and the filming schedule plus ensuing promotional tour will keep Glover locked down for the foreseeable future. Not to mention his touring obligations behind his latest Childish Gambino project, “Awaken, My Love!”.
According to Nick Grad, FX’s president of original programming, the network is nevertheless committing to Glover in a big way. “Donald is a remarkable artist, effortlessly shifting from actor to writer, producer, director and musician to create one amazing project after another,” he said. “Atlanta was just the beginning, the breakout comedy of the year and a series revered as much for its originality as its honest look at the experience of being aspiring, young and black in that legendary city. We’re proud to partner with Donald in an overall deal that will allow him to continue turning his creative vision into incredible television.”
Couple that presumably lucrative deal with the two Golden Globes Atlanta just won and it’s safe to say everything’s coming up Glover.
