Julien Baker was one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful singer-songwriter voices to come out of 2016 — which is exactly why we CoSigned her. Now, the young Memphis musician has taken the next step in her career by signing to Matador Records for a re-release of her Sprained Ankle debut and a brand new 7-inch single.
Featuring a pair of songs from the Sprained Ankle sessions, the 7-inch is due out March 17th. The B-side is a track called “Distant Solar System”, while the title track and A-side, “Funeral Pyre” is available to listen to now. As can be expected from Baker, it’s a delicate, fingerpicked song that finds her hushed vocals simply captivating as she sings, “I would’ve loved you with a dying fire/ Let you smother me down to the embers from spite/ Turning my limbs black as cinder/ A funeral pyre.” Listen below
Matador will re-release Sprained Ankle on CD and vinyl on March 17th in all territories outside of the US and Australia. Baker will tour the Midwest later this month with Ben Gibbard before heading overseas for a spring EU tour. Her complete itinerary is below.
