The Comedy Cellar is a favorite spot for New York’s comedy elite, an intimate space where on any given night the likes of Jerry Seinfeld or Louis CK can be found testing out new material. The scene Wednesday night, however, was a bit more special than usual, as those in attendance were treated to one huge surprise set after another.
As the New York Times recounts, Dave Attell, Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, Aziz Ansari, and Dave Chappelle took the stage in succession, each performing a bit of stand up. As Chappelle remarked to open his own set, “You guys saw a billion dollars’ worth of comedians tonight.”
Ansari was rehearsing for his upcoming gig as host of Saturday Night Live, while Rock was testing material for his forthcoming tour. Seinfeld and Chappelle had come from The Tonight Show, where they had competed in a game of “Catchphrase” with First Lady Michelle Obama. As for Schumer, the Times notes that she “did not expect to perform, but in a hallway with the other comics, she said she wanted in.”
The hundred or so people lucky to be in attendance were prohibited from taking photos or video. However, both Rock and the evening’s MC, Jon Laster, documented the historic evening via social media.
