    The 2017 Academy Awards take place this evening at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. Now in its 89th year, the annual award honors cinematic achievements in the film industry.

    Despite an historic onstage mishap, Moonlight won Best Picture, beating La La LandManchester By the Sea, Arrival, Hidden Figures, Hell or High Water, Hacksaw Ridge, Fences, and Lion.

    Damien Chazelle won Best Director for La La Land, edging out stiff competition in Mel Gibson, Barry Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan, and Denis Villeneuve.

    Casey Affleck won Best Actor for Manchester By the Sea over Ryan Gosling, Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield, and Viggo Mortensen. While Emma Stone won Best Actress for La La Land over Natalie Portman, Ruth Negga, Isabelle Huppert, and the only and only Meryl Streep.

    Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight over Jeff Bridges, Dev Patel, Lucas Hedges, and Michael Shannon. He is the first Muslim actor to win an Academy Award. Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for Fences, topping a tough category that included Naomie Harris, Nicole Kidman, Octavia Spencer, and Michelle Williams. She is the first black actress to win an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony.

    Kenneth Lonergan won Best Original Screenplay for Manchester by the Sea, while Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McRaney won Best Adapted Screenplay for Moonlight.

    Ezra Edelman’s outstanding and exhaustive O.J.: Made in America took home Best Documentary Feature Film, while Orlando von Einsiedel’s The White Helmets won Best Documentary Short Film.

    Justin Hurwitz won Best Original Song (“City of Stars”) and Best Original Score for La La Land.

    Disney and Pixar had a good night, winning Best Animated Feature Film for Zootopia and Best Animated Short Film for Piper, respectively.

    Suicide Squad — yes, the ridiculous Batman Vs. Superman spinoff — won Best Makeup and Hairstyling, while Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took home Best Costume Design.

    On the technical front, La La Land won Best Cinematography, Hacksaw Ridge won Best Editing, The Jungle Book won Best Visual Effects, La La Land won Best Production Design, Arrival won Best Sound Editing, and Kevin O’Connell’s record Oscar losing streak came to an end after he won his 21st nomination for Best Sound Mixing with Hacksaw Ridge.
