Many consider Paul McCartney’s 1989 album Flowers in the Dirt something of a return to form for the former Beatle, but he didn’t make the comeback alone. The record featured appearances by George Martin, David Gilmour, and most prolifically, Elvis Costello. McCartney and Costello wrote four of the album’s 12 tracks, including the hit single “My Brave Face”. There were, however, many more collaborative tracks between the pair that didn’t make the final cut.
Today, McCartney is sharing one of those rare demos, “Twenty Fine Fingers”. Previously only available on bootleg albums under the incorrect title “Twenty-Five Fingers”, the track is a driving acoustic song filled with classic Macca-style hooks and structures. Take a listen below.
Part of McCartney’s ongoing Archive Collection, a deluxe reissue of Flowers in the Dirt is due out March 24th via MPL/Capitol/UMe. The remastered album will be available on double-CD, double-LP, or as a deluxe box set. In addition to the nine previously unreleased McCartney/Costello demos found on the standard formats, the box set includes a DVD, a 32-page notebook of McCartney’s handwritten lyrics and notes, a 64-page photobook, a 112-page book featuring exclusive new interviews, and a catalog from Linda McCartney’s photo exhibition for the album.
