It’s doubtful that when Coachella was designing its first lineup poster leading up to the inaugural 1999 edition of the world-famous festival that they had any idea how iconic it would become. Well, that’s not true. That first poster is decidedly not iconic, and they drastically changed the design for future events. But the Coachella poster, as a whole, is hanging on countless walls, its release anticipated by music geeks for months. It’s a thing of symbolic significance beyond just a list of bands playing a concert.
The current poster design has been in place since the fourth installment of Coachella in 2003, except for a one-year diversion in 2008. The idea is simple: The festival lineup is broken up by day, with font size getting smaller as that day shifts from marquee acts to lesser-knowns. Over the years, bands like Muse, The Killers, Kings of Leon, and Calvin Harris have climbed out of the tiny-font status into the largest font possible, and likewise, a band like Jane’s Addiction or a groovy laid-back dude like Jack Johnson would never be considered headliner status in this day and age, like they were in 2001 and 2008, respectively.
And so evolved this project. We’ve taken every past Coachella lineup poster and rearranged the bands so that they appear as we’d bill them today. Some lineups reveal themselves to be remarkably strong in this light, while others have not faired well against the cruelty of time. We’ve also gone ahead and placed them in order of worst to best because, well, we’re Consequence of Sound and that’s what we like to do.
So flip through the 17 posters, re-ordered by our staff and re-designed by Art Director Cap Blackard to reflect modern-day popularity, and feel free to take over the comment section and let us know how you’d do things differently.
The Good: The second Coachella came after a year off and, in hindsight, is best at its most esoteric. Appearances from Squarepusher, Gangstarr, and Pedro the Lion wouldn’t likely draw people onto the polo fields, but would turn some on to lesser-appreciated talents.
The Bad: Lots not to like about this Coachella, namely the lack of a viable headliner. At this point, acts like Jane’s Addiction and Weezer are hardly “gets” for a major music festival, while many others like Tricky, Blonde Redhead, and Mos Def are about a decade beyond their prime as innovative artists. More than any other Coachella lineup, this one has aged particularly poorly, with not a single smaller font act going on to become a major star.
Notes on the Original (See Below): What’s kind of wild is how much electronic music this early Coachella hosted. Five of the first seven acts listed would be considered dance music of some sort, making arguments that Coachella has favored EDM too much in recent years lose some of its weight. Unfortunately, this is also one of the most dude-centric lineups of any music festival ever. Look down that list and try to find a woman. It’ll take a while.
The Good: Even 17 years later, those headliners would still play, with the top two on each day very much deserving of a marquee status. Wild that even in its inaugural year Coachella tapped marquee acts that have maintained such a status for almost two decades. And even beyond that, with acts like Pavement, At the Drive-In, Modest Mouse, and Moby, the top little section of the poster is particularly stacked.
The Bad: The bottom half of the lineup. This is just from the fact that after 17 years, a lot of the acts that played the first Coachella have faded into obscurity.
Notes on the Original: So many of the groups that played this first Coachella have gone on to become festival regulars, speaking to the idea of certain acts being “Coachella favorites.” This includes Pavement and At the Drive-In choosing the festival as the start of their American reunion, all of the headliners coming back for repeat engagements, and electronic acts like Roni Size, Amon Tobin, and the Chemical Brothers becoming fixtures.
The Good: If this Coachella were announced today, there would be some great gets, including an Oasis reunion, an appearance from Foo Fighters, who have managed to avoid headlining the fest ever since, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Foos along with the Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age, and the Mars Volta also make it one of the most rawk-heavy tops of the bills.
The Bad: In hindsight, this lineup suffers for some questionable choices in taste. Acts ranging from Jack Johnson, Cake, and G-Love to Citizen Cope, Pete Yorn, and Ozomatli. The overall feel of the lineup suffers from a strange juxtaposition of KROQ radio acts of the time and the more obvious choices from the underground.
Notes on the Original: Sunday was definitely the better of the two days at this Coachella, with reordering the lineup making it look a little more appealing. The original poster’s low billing of Queens and Mars Volta hides a couple of the event’s strongest acts. This year also showed early Coachella’s tendency to stick with the known, tapping the Chemical Brothers for the third event in a row, and Paul Oakenfold and Blonde Redhead for the second consecutive year.
The Good: What may go down as the end of indie rock being king at Coachella; it went out not with a bang but a whimper. Still the lineup does feature a number of good gets, including a double portion of Nick Cave and Trent Reznor’s How to Destroy Angels. Appearances from rising acts like Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, The xx, Disclosure, and Grimes also look great just a few years later.
The Bad: The headliners. While Blur and the Stone Roses excited a very vocal minority of the Coachella demographic, the reality is that no one watched them. Substituting them out for alt-J and Bassnectar doesn’t really make things that much better. The event’s other original headliners, Phoenix and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, also haven’t aged well.
Notes on the Original: The year of the sandstorm on Weekend One, 2013 certainly feels like a dividing line in hindsight, with 2014 beginning an era of special guests and younger demographics. Lou Reed appeared on the original lineup, but wouldn’t be in good enough health to play, eventually passing away in October.
The Good: The Macca year. Since 2009, the greatest living Beatle has played a number of major music festivals, making this not as huge of a get in hindsight. But at the time, booking Paul McCartney was a huge coup for Coachella and made up for a scattershot lineup.
The Bad: While not a bad lineup through and through, the bill gets weak early on and continues. Many of the third line placements, from TV on the Radio and Band of Horses to Thievery Corporation and Beirut, just aren’t that exciting only seven years later. And the bottom two lines (four lines on a particularly rough Friday) contain a number of groups that just never hit.
Notes on the Original: This was the start of Coachella’s booking of a yearly headliner that would make fans wonder whether the band was a reach at the time. That band was the Killers in 2009, and though it is unlikely that the band will ever headline the event again, in hindsight, it doesn’t look bad either. It’s also important to remember that Amy Winehouse was originally on the lineup, but canceled when she ran into legal trouble, to be replaced by M.I.A. Hercules and the Love Affair also dropped out, which was a particular bummer because Antony would have been around to collaborate on their massive track, “Blind”.
The Good: 2016 might always be known as the Guns N’ Roses year, but at least the booking lived up to the hype. Beyond that, the festival continued to move away from prestige and into a more populous look. Luckily, that made for some breakouts by acts like Sia, Sufjan Stevens, and Disclosure (playing with countless guests). And though it isn’t flashy, there is plenty of quality on the bill; Grimes, Beach House, Underworld, and Run the Jewels never look bad on a festival poster.
The Bad: Unfortunately, only a year later and 2/3 of the headliners already have lost their luster. LCD Soundsystem was thrilling to see in early 2016, but after they played every festival known to man (and even tried to throw their own festival), it’s just less special in hindsight. Calvin Harris, on the other hand, only has his own unimaginative performance to blame for how lame he looks as the closing day’s headliner. Elsewhere, the likes of The Kills, Miike Snow, Lord Huron, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes all feel like misses just 12 months after the fact.
Notes on the Original: We didn’t update this poster yet because not that much has shifted in just a year. The most notable artists that would probably rise in font size are The Chainsmokers, who could rise high into the second line, and Anderson .Paak, who would probably place on the third line. This will be an interesting year to look back on, since it seemed very shallow in terms of the career lengths of its acts. In five years, the 2016 Coachella could look very good or god awful
The Good: While not the most impressive top of the bill ever for Coachella, 2005’s installment was particularly thick with talent, looking great for about five lines of bookings. From the currently disassembled Fiery Furnaces to ’80s titans New Order and Bauhaus to a huge contingent of peak aughts indie rock (Bright Eyes, Wilco, Rilo Kiley, Spoon, Bloc Party, Tegan and Sara), there is a lot to love on this lineup. Even way down at the bottom, you could do a lot worse than Pinback and Midlake.
The Bad: A lot to love, that is, unless you are a fan of anything but rock music. 2005 is also a major failure in genre diversity, though that probably wouldn’t have bothered many Coachella attendees at the time.
Notes on the Original: The original billing makes this fest look a lot worse, with acts like Keane and Snow Patrol showing a bit of questionable taste on Coachella’s part. This event was also notable for the breakout of Arcade Fire on the Outdoor Theatre stage before dark and the cancellation by Cocteau Twins. Also you can see the beginning of M83’s gradual increase in font size, which has now peaked with a second line spot on this year’s lineup.
The Good: It’s too soon to have a true historical perspective on Coachella’s 2015 lineup, but there are a lot of bands and artists to like in 2016, such as Tame Impala, Alabama Shakes, The Weeknd, and Drake. (Sure, Aubrey Graham’s festival performances draw mixed responses from fans and haters alike due to his sets’ choppy transitions from song to song, but Drake simply has too many features to sleep on some amazing guest appearances.)
The Bad: If you were to transport this lineup one year into the future, you’d naturally have a lot of artists who were already on the tail end of touring in support of their last records, like Interpol, The War on Drugs, Run the Jewels, and St. Vincent, to name a few. Undoubtedly some of these artists will return to the festival circuit in 2016, but there wouldn’t be a ton of new acts to see for seasoned concert-goers.
Notes on the Original: Vic Mensa is a small-font artist, but this could finally be the year the Chicago emcee drops his next studio album and pushes into later set times on bigger stages. He’s shown he’s got the performance chops at past appearances; he just doesn’t have the discography yet. Other lower-billed bands who are making their cases for bigger spots include Royal Blood and Saint Motel. The event itself featured two huge guests not on the poster, with Kanye West joining The Weeknd on Weekend Two and Madonna appearing with Drake on Weekend One.
The Good: The Replacements! Need we say more? If you’re looking for other standouts, the obvious answers include the also-reunited Neutral Milk Hotel and local-boys-made-good Queens of the Stone Age. Arcade Fire is a group of lab-created Canadian supersoldiers designed specifically to headline festivals, so it makes sense that they would get top billing here.
The Bad: OutKast pretty much slept through their own reunion, so it’s hard to get too thrilled about them in hindsight. In fact, 2014 has no shortage of so-so inclusions, from the has-beens (AFI, Fatboy Slim) to the flashes in the pan (Foster the People, Capital Cities).
Notes on the Original: Coachella’s organizers decided to play it relatively safe here, resulting in a solid lineup that didn’t bring much new to the table. It’s hard to think of more festival-ready bands than Muse and Arcade Fire, but you have to wonder what 2014 might have been if Coachella had swung for the fences a bit more. Also worth noting that Beady Eye, the Oasis spin-off, dropped off the original poster, and special guests rained down during Pharrell’s set. Chance the Rapper also canceled, but only on Weekend Two. Weekend One saw Justin Bieber memorably joining him and also featured big sister Beyoncé singing with Solange.
The Good: LCD Soundsystem is the obvious standout here, with a reincarnated version of the band set to headline the festival in 2016. Maybe six years ago it would have been difficult to imagine James Murphy and Co. overtaking Jay-Z, but nostalgia is a powerful drug. Also, how about Sia? It seems crazy that the original lineup had her so low, but the Australian singer really revitalized her career in 2014 and hasn’t looked back since. She’s also returning for 2016, and her stage is decidedly bigger this time around. Speaking of bigger stages, check out Florence and the Machine! It’s hard to believe this juggernaut of an act was stuck in the middle of the pack just a few years ago.
The Bad: This lineup is actually pretty solid all around, with tiny gems like Kevin Devine, Frightened Rabbit, and Beach House scattered around the bottom half. Of course, some groups haven’t aged quite as well. Here’s looking at you, MGMT. Also bringing the lineup down is simply the amount of acts booked. For some reason, Coachella decided to have less action on the polo fields this year, making the poster seem thin overall.
Notes on the Original: 2010 is probably the weirdest year to look back on, in terms of once-small bands that have since become household names. Florence is the most obvious example, but what about Beach House, Frank Turner, Flying Lotus, The xx, and Ra Ra Riot? Who knows what they were putting in the water backstage this year. This time, at least, Coachella’s organizers proved impressively prophetic.
The Good: The top three lines on each day feature many artists who would still command top-tier spots on any given festival’s lineup in 2016. Some of these 2003 artists would make for high-profile reunions today, such as Beastie Boys, The White Stripes, Sonic Youth, Black Eyed Peas, and N*E*R*D. Prescient picks include (then) small-font acts like El-P, Ben Folds, and Aesop Rock.
The Bad: As is to be expected with guessing at future stardom for musicians, some highly billed artists turned out to be less influential in the long run, including Masters at Work and the Donnas.
Notes on the Original: The Black Eyed Peas were billed in the second-to-last row. Coachella’s 2003 date took place about two months before Elephunk (which went on to be certified double platinum) dropped, and the group didn’t release any singles for the record until after Coachella. Lots of these groups also contain artists that would be major performers in their own right today (Jack White/The White Stripes, Pharrell/N*E*R*D, Fergie/The Black Eyed Peas).
The Good: The past decade has been mostly kind to the headliners of 2006, most of which had already cemented themselves as legends back then. Daft Punk slightly edges out Depeche Mode as the Day 1 headliner this time around, but both groups remain attractive draws. And, despite the near-comical saga of their forthcoming fifth LP, Tool still dominates Day 2. Though Coachella has a history of booking forgettable bands in the bottom half, it’s exciting to see how far acts like Animal Collective, Metric, and especially Phoenix have come. Others, like Sleater-Kinney, are just now embarking on a second life.
The Bad: Not every group from the mid-2000s made it out alive. Remember our brief fling with She Wants Revenge? That was sort of cute. And there’s no way Matisyahu, James Blunt, or Damian Marley belong close to the top of a Coachella lineup, then or now.
Notes on the Original: It’s nice to see Eagles of Death Metal represented in this lineup, as the Palm Desert rockers represent the closest thing Coachella has to a hometown act. It makes you wonder why they were left off the 2016 lineup, especially given the events that transpired this year. History hasn’t been especially kind to the rest of the 2006 lineup, but there are definitely some gems that would be welcome back today.
The Good: Kanye West and the Strokes headlining on the same day? Yes, please. Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, and Animal Collective – all booked on Saturday – would each make for satisfying headliners today. Nas performing with Damian Marley is a unique pairing that would be worth seeing, along with the Ryan Olson-led supergroup Gayngs, whose members included Justin Vernon, P.O.S, and Dessa, among others.
The Bad: When looking back at Coachella lineups, Kings of Leon probably wouldn’t make the cut as a headliner today, seeing as they’ve somewhat fallen off since 2013’s Mechanical Bull. The top-billed artists on Friday are nothing to sniff at, but it’s the weakest batch of artists of the three days considering that The Black Keys and Interpol both toured the festival circuit heavily in the time since their respective 2014 records.
Notes on the Original: Coachella also had the foresight to nab a post-Innerspeaker Tame Impala, and the Australian psychedelic outfit could hold down a headlining spot of their own now. It’s pretty incredible that the festival also had two future pop stars as tiny-font acts: Miguel and Ellie Goulding – both are easily main-stage talent now. OFWGKTA, Cage the Elephant, Foster the People, Foals, and Marina and the Diamonds were all solid mid-tier pickups. A fun. reunion from the band’s current hiatus would also be sure to draw a big crowd for the nostalgia factor of Some Nights.
The Good: The 2007 edition of Coachella featured a bunch of tiny-font gems: Brother Ali, The Avett Brothers, and Lupe Fiasco, to name a few. The headliners are all great, and, in fact, Saturday’s reimagined top three acts – LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, and Tiësto – could easily serve as three headliners for a festival today (and you’d have Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Black Keys to spare). Similarly, the Friday trio of Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys, and David Guetta could also carry a festival in 2016. Coachella also had some great mid-tier picks, like Against Me!, Ratatat, and of Montreal.
The Bad: Sunday featured the most glaring inclusion of artists that would not make the cut for second-row billing on a festival lineup today: Manu Chao, Air, Happy Mondays, and Paul Van Dyk.
Notes on the Original: When Coachella rolled around, David Guetta had never charted in the US. The now-famous DJ was years removed from major singles like “Sexy Bitch” (2009) and “Titanium” (2011). His production career took off later down the road with the likes of The Black Eyed Peas’ The E.N.D. (2009) and Rihanna’s Unapologetic (2012). Despite being billed in the last row on the day of performance, Amy Winehouse already had released Back to Black the previous fall, and the record was destined to go platinum.
The Good: Whoa, look at that weird poster. The festival looks pretty nuts with everything lumped together, and about four more lines of top-tier talent. Particularly cool are the now legendary appearances from Prince, Roger Waters, Portishead, and Aphex Twin, as well as a number of then-rising acts that have proven to grow massive, like Vampire Weekend, St. Vincent, Calvin Harris, and The National.
The Bad: Coachella bought a little hard into indie rock in 2008, with acts like I’m From Barcelona, Midnight Juggernauts, and Black Kids all appearing like little time capsules of our collective questionable taste. Also the revised lineup hides one of the worst things to ever happen on the main stage on a Coachella night: Jack Johnson.
Notes on the Original: Portishead was initially tapped to headline this Coachella but got bumped down with the late add of the Purple One. This was also the year that Sean Penn gave his motivational speech to have people get on a bus and go to New Orleans with him. A number of acts were dropped from the poster, including Madness, The Horrors, Turbonegro, and The Streets, with most getting booked the next year.
The Good: Close to a knockout, 2012’s lineup is notable for its diversity and foresight. Reunion performances by Pulp, Refused, and At the Drive-In stand out from the crowd, but there are plenty of gems to unearth in the rest of the lineup, as well. This year featured the likes of Frank Ocean, Laura Marling, Gary Clark Jr., and St. Vincent before any of the above broke out as proper stars. As for the headliners, it’s hard to argue with Radiohead and the one-two punch of Dre and Snoop.
The Bad: That other headliner. Look, there’s nothing wrong with The Black Keys, but it’s kind of crazy how hyped they were for a while back there. A lineup that already had so much going for it deserved a better top dawg.
Notes on the Original: Coachella had already hit its stride a few years prior to 2012, but this lineup represents the festival at or near the peak of its powers. Say what you will about the headliners, but each represents a very different fan base and thus a new entry point for fans who might not have considered attending previously. Not surprisingly, 2012 marks the year Coachella expanded to two separately ticketed weekends with identical lineups.
The Good: Yeah, it doesn’t get much better than this at the top of lineups. With three acts on each day that could be legitimate headliners, the third line is made up of strong amphitheater-level acts. From there you would still see rare performances from the likes of Stereolab, Le Tigre, Thursday, and Sparta. If this Coachella happened today, people would lose their shit.
The Bad: The bottom three lines get really obscure, again speaking more to the length of time between 2004 and present day, rather than poor booking on Coachella’s part.
Notes on the Original: Wilco actually ended up not performing, while Jimmy Eat World skipped and was dropped from the poster. The Killers managed the complete turn from last line to eventual headliner, truly a testament to how far the band came in a short amount of time. Both them and LCD Soundsystem played in the Gobi tent, while the Main stage on Sunday went Muse->Thursday->Belle & Sebastian->Air->The Flaming Lips->The Cure. Pretty great even without our shuffling.
