Yes, summer is not technically over yet, but it’s not too early to look forward to what’s coming up for the rest of the year. The last few months have brought a wave of excellent shows allowing us to soak up the warm air that the hottest months bring. This has included Lady Gaga as the first solo female headliner at Wrigley Field, the launch of the Gorillaz tour in Chicago, and a very limited run for Sufjan Stevens’ Planetarium. We’ve seen Roger Waters in an arena, Green Day in a stadium, and U2 in an even bigger stadium, all of which still had a hard time topping one of cinema’s best composers competing against Lollapalooza.
Will fall be able to top the summer season? Time will tell. But with a lineup that includes one of electronic music’s most exciting figures presenting a 3-D event, one of rap’s elder statesman making a triumphant return to touring, and a guitar god reaching her showstopping peak with a brand-new album and visual presentation. Yeah, it’s gonna be a big finish to the year and enough to remind us why we love going to concerts in the first place.

Fans of Liam Gallagher as a solo artist or Oasis as a band will surely already be lining up to grab the best spot in the venue for his upcoming tour (and justifiably so, as his Lollapalooza after-show was a hard-rocking revelation of no-shits-given swagger). However, it might be worth the price of admission just to find out what wacky controversial shit he has to say that given day or how he might decide to completely throw everything off the rails (as he did at his actual Lollapalooza set, after playing only five songs). But after that train wreck, it seems that the younger Fighting Gallagher Brother has been delivering solid performances, and previews of As You Were are more than promising in their feisty glam. Hungry horror hounds, get ready for some October lunch as Goblin are back to elevate the Halloween season. No, Claudio Simonetti isn’t in the band anymore, but you do have three-fifths of the original band who helped carve out the signature sounds for Dario Argento’s Suspiria and George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. By our count, folks, that’s what we call a majority, and in this day and age, that’s pretty much as good as it gets. Besides, are you really going to pass up the opportunity to hear tracks off two of the most iconic horror films of all time during the season of the witch? Get there. –Michael Roffman

23. Flying Lotus 3-D

Flying Lotus, ever the dynamic musician, is launching a 3-D tour. Yes, with the glasses and everything. The show premiered at Los Angeles’ FYF Festival in July. Pairing well with Flying Lotus’ dense and funky style, the FYF performance was laden with large screens, bright lights, and cinematic horror imagery. With the help of FlyLo collaborator Thundercat, the 3-D tour will kick off with two shows at the inaugural Red Bull Music Academy Festival in LA before lighting up across North America. Though Thundercat will only be present at the first two performances, Flying Lotus’ multimedia prowess is more than enough to carry him solo. Earlier this year, FlyLo released Kuso, a manic film full of grotesque imagery and horrific oddities. Even on a flat movie screen, it’s impossible to look away from Kuso. And if Flying Lotus is able to transfer his cinematic touch to the stage, his 3-D tour is guaranteed to be engrossing. –Carly Snider

22. Ministry and Death Grips
At first take, Ministry and Death Grips may seem like an odd pairing — one is a staple of industrial rock, the other an anarchist rap trio. But both make music that is dense, confrontational, and dissonant; their mediums may be different, but their aura is the same. Their co-headlining tour kicks off in October and runs through November, taking the groups all around North America, including Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Denver. Ministry will be supporting their upcoming album, AmeriKKKant, which is due later this year. Even without AmeriKKKant, Ministry will have plenty of playable material from any of their 13 studio albums. Death Grips’ latest release, “Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber Megamix)”, is a 22-minute assault of sound. Upon the song’s debut, the band revealed it was working on their next album. If one thing’s certain, it’s that this tour is going to be loud. –Carly Snider

Did you catch John Carpenter last year? No? Good news, the Master of Horror is coming back for another round, and this time, it looks like he’s pivoting away from his solo albums and towards his forthcoming release, Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998, due out October 20th via Sacred Bones. That’s not to say we don’t want to hear his latest compositions — both volumes of Lost Themes make for incredible listens and do wonders for our Carpenter-starved imaginations — but to have a tour solely focused on his greatest themes is admittedly quite exciting. If we’re lucky, maybe he’ll go deeper on a few of his soundtracks and offer up choice selections like “Laurie’s Theme” or “Division 13” or “Chariots of Pumpkins”. Hey, it’s Halloween season; everyone’s entitled to one or two or three good deep cuts. –Michael Roffman

20. Danzig
2017 has been a monumental year for Danzig. The Misfits co-founder and former frontman released Black Laden Crow, his first new album in seven years, and is gearing up to tour throughout the month of September. Danzig will tour the United States, stopping in Cleveland, Detroit, and San Francisco among others. Most notably, however, he will be appearing at Chicago’s Riot Fest where he is set to perform his album Danzig III in its entirety. Danzig will be joined by Corrosion of Conformity and Deafheaven while on tour, with the latter performing the final three dates and the former performing each date prior to Riot Fest. It’s almost impossible for an artist to quietly resurface with new material after nearly a decade, so Danzig’s tour is sure to be one hell of an experience. –Lindsay Teske

What happened to the full-album tours? What was all the rage just a couple years ago may have already run its course. Is it our fault? Maybe. But while we’d love to take credit for influencing major industry trends, the truth is there will always be a market for full-album tours. And as they go, Tegan and Sara are the perfect artists to attempt it. It’s not just that The Con is a fantastic album (it is), but it’s also that Tegan and Sara have been touring their great last album, Love You to Death, for the last year and could use the shakeup. To sweeten the deal, the 22 shows will also include all-new acoustic arrangements of the songs. The result is a tour that feels like an ideal marriage of the right artist picking the right material at the right time. There’s no con about that. –Philip Cosores

Look, we’ve already talked about how excited we are to hear what Billy Corgan and Rick Rubin cooked up together for Ogilala. Hell, I wrote the entry in our accompanying albums list only a few days ago. But we’re also intrigued to see how he takes the stripped-down set on the road. In some respects, he kind of previewed this show last year when he offered acoustic renditions of his Pumpkins catalogue, even surprising fans by inviting out former guitarist James Iha. Elegant was one of the best ways to describe that tour, and we’re expecting the same thing for this run, particularly since new single “Aeronaut” suggests nothing more than tasty slices of ornate pop from the singer-songwriter. Even better, according to a press release, he plans on playing a second set of past favorites, and knowing Corgan, he’ll go very, very deep into his oeuvre. –Michael Roffman

We can pick apart the validity and value of legacy tours 12 ways to Sunday, but every once in awhile, a tour comes around that just immediately brings back the magic feelings, and the jaded questions fade away. The combination of legendary Brooklyn rapper Nas and the enigmatic, charismatic, altogether incredible Ms. Lauryn Hill is just such a tour. A pairing that’ll bring together old-school hip-hop heads jonesing for a return to their glory days with youngsters craving a bit of that golden era. That said, the close friends won’t be coasting on the past. While Nas will surely gather together some material from his upcoming new album, Ms. Hill will surely pull from a decade-spanning set of covers, Fugees songs, and solo material. –Lior Phillips

From September to November, Kesha will be touring Rainbow — her first album in five years. Kesha’s re-emergence is significant. The singer has spent the past several years fighting a legal battle centering on allegations against former producer Luke Gottwald, a time in which Kesha has revealed that she didn’t know if she would be able to release music again. The Rainbow Tour hits several major North American cities this fall, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, and Boston. Announcements of Kesha’s plan to tour again has evidently excited fans as the tour has almost sold out completely — regular tickets are only still available for two out of her 24 tour dates. As an album, Rainbow is peppered with themes of resilience, power, and self-love. Performed live, these elements will only be amplified. –Lindsay Teske

15. Grizzly Bear
Grizzly Bear is returning to the road, rested and ready after their extensive Shields tour. The Brooklyn-based quartet is traveling across Europe and North America in support of their latest album, Painted Ruins, released in mid-August. Kicking off in October and running through mid-December, the Painted Ruins tour includes extended stays in Brooklyn (of course), Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Brooklyn’s new Brooklyn Steel — where the band will play for three nights — also recently housed LCD Soundsystem for a five-day concert streak. If Grizzly Bear’s performance is anything like their new record, it is sure to be powerful and self-assured. Bassist Chris Taylor took a much more hands-on role in the songwriting on Painted Ruins, heightening the album’s drama while maintaining a distinct level of comfort. The new album also seems to be Grizzly Bear’s most collaborative yet, which is sure to make for a captivating live dynamic. –Carly Snider

14. The National

There might not be a more consistent band in rock and roll than The National. Regardless of whether they are working in New York or Los Angeles, regardless of the fact that the shows have grown from clubs to amphitheaters, and regardless of whether indie rock is in fashion or not, The National continue to hold their place as the vanguard. On their latest album, Sleep Well Beast, the group is predictably solid, less intent on matching their previous heights and more so in continuing to wade in new, unexpected waters. For their tour, the band will bounce from Europe to the US a couple times, highlighted by four nights in London, a big-time appearance at the Hollywood Bowl, and multi-night engagements in cities like Chicago, Berlin, Dublin, Montreal, and Seattle. It’s a solid three months on the road and feels like it might be a precursor for festival dates in 2018. Fortunately for fans, it’s not just on record that the band is consistent. He’s been championed by the likes of Kurt Cobain and cited as an influence by some of indie rock’s most accomplished acts. For some, he’s an overlooked genius. For others, it’s less about the music and more about Daniel Johnston’s story – how he used art to overcome mental illness – that touches them. Whatever your take on Johnston as an artist, his fall farewell tour offers a unique chance to embrace the final leg of his journey as a musician. Johnston will play eight dates in different cities, each show backed by a different band who will select the setlist. These dates include The Preservation All-Stars joining him in New Orleans, The Districts and Modern Baseball in Philadelphia, Jeff Tweedy & Friends in Chicago, and Built to Spill in both Portland and Vancouver. Each night will begin with a screening of Jeff Feuerzeig’s award-winning 2005 documentary, The Devil and Daniel Johnston. It plans to be a fitting farewell to one of the most unconventional and inspiring indie artists of the last several decades. –Matt Melis

Seriously, what do you have better to do? I wanna know. You gripe and moan about rock and roll being dead, and then you miss Foo Fighters to stay home and what, brush your hair, binge watch whatever for the umpteenth time? We’re talking about a straight-ahead rock band that legitimately commands arena-size audiences. A living-legend, iron horse frontman who, should he fracture a leg because he performs so damn hard, will play an entire show from a self-designed guitar throne before he’d cancel on fans. Oh, and what’s that? The Foos have a new album due out. Okay, so you have arguably the biggest rock band in the world fronted by the hardest-working frontman alive hitting the road and debuting new tunes. If your ass doesn’t make it there, you’re just taking a dying breed for granted. –Matt Melis

11. Marilyn Manson w/ Alice Glass

Twenty-one years ago, when Marilyn Manson crossed the bridge from cult goth rocker to bona fide MTV sensation with the album Antichrist Superstar, it would have been hard to predict just how long the musician has been able to hold the spotlight. But here we are in 2017, with Manson on the cusp of releasing his 10th career album, Heaven Upside Down, and still thriving in the hard rock scene. A small part of the long-term success has been through his alliances, which has included kindred spirits Trent Reznor and Billy Corgan over the years. This run will see Manson make a new friend in former Crystal Castles singer Alice Glass, who will open select dates on the biggest solo tour of her career. Be it headlining mid-sized venues on his own or appearing at festivals like Ozzfest Meets Knotfest and Aftershock, Manson will strike a balance between showcasing his newest material and cementing his career legacy.
