Billie Eilish is a teen idol, a superstar, and now… a Disney princess? Or perhaps we should say Queen, as the reigning ruler of pop music has signed a deal with streaming giant Disney+ for her new concert film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles. The special premieres September 3rd, and Eilish has today shared a glamorous new trailer for the special, which you can watch below.
A Love Letter to Los Angeles shares a name with her upcoming sophomore album, Happier Than Ever. Via Billboard, Eilish will perform all 16 tracks from the LP in an intimate set at The Hollywood Bowl. She’ll be accompanied by her collaborator/brother, FINNEAS, as well as both the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The latter’s music and artistic director Gustavo Dudaeml will conduct alongside Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, with orchestral arrangements from David Campbell (Ariana Grande, Harry Styles).
“Disney is incredibly iconic, so to collaborate on something like this is a huge honor,” Eilish said in a statement. “To be able to present my album in this way and dedicate it to the city that I love and grew up in is so exciting to me. I hope you love it.”
The film was co-directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids) and Oscar-winner Patrick Osborne (Wreck-It-Ralph, Bolt). In addition to the performance footage, the movie features a whimsical animated segments that take “viewers on a dreamlike journey through Billie’s hometown of Los Angeles and its most iconic backdrops.”
“We are all huge admirers of Billie and FINNEAS here in our household,” Rodriguez said. “They are such impressive, world class talents that it’s a real honor to work with them on this film. The way the narrative story and animated pieces weave through her incredible concert performance, makes this a spectacular event that is truly unique.”
The new trailer opens with Eilish staring into the camera. “A self-reflection about growth,” she intones in voice over. “I definitely romanticize Los Angeles. We all have these idealized versions of ourselves in our head. I’ve never done anything like this.”
Cue flashing lights, smash cuts to animation, FINNEAS taking the stage, and Eilish’s stirring new single, “NDA.” Check out the Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles trailer after the jump.
Aside from the aforementioned “NDA,” fans can expect to see her perform previous singles “my future,” “Your Power,” “Therefore I Am,” and “Lost Cause.”
This will be Eilish’s second film of the year, following Apple TV+’s Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry. That documentary reportedly cost Apple $25 million, and while we don’t have figures for Disney+’s acquisition, you can bet Eilish has tens of millions of reasons to be happy with the deal.
