Alice in Chains singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell and Gibson have unveiled the new signature model “Wino” Les Paul Custom, Cantrell’s first collaboration with Gibson Custom Shop.

Cantrell has been a longtime Gibson player throughout his career, and “The Wino” was often his axe choice. Now fans can own a replica of the iconic guitar thanks to the luthiers at Gibson.

“The Wino has always been one of my favorite guitars,” Cantrell said via a press release. “It’s a really good-looking guitar.”

And a good-sounding one, too. If the countless Alice in Chains recordings haven’t convinced you from the get-go, the signature model sounds phenomenal in Gibson’s demo videos.

Cantrell’s personal touches and custom appointments have been recreated for the Wino Custom: a Murphy Lab aged “Wino” Wine Red finish over a maple top and 9-hole weight-relieved mahogany body, aged gold hardware, Grover Kidney tuners, and 490R and 498T pickups with a gold cover on the neck pickup and exposed coils on the bridge pickup.

The guitar also features a Fishman Powerbridge piezo pickup-equipped bridge for acoustic-like tonal options — a requisite for Cantrell’s sound. There are two volume controls (one for each magnetic pickup), and a third volume (where the bridge tone control would normally be) for the Powerbridge piezo pickup. A master tone and a three-way toggle pickup selector round out the controls, and a stereo output jack allows for discrete electric and acoustic signal routing.

The guitar comes with a Jerry Cantrell Custom case and each guitar is hand-signed by Cantrell on the back of the headstock.

By the time of this article, the Jerry Cantrell “Wino” Les Paul Custom was sold out on Gibson’s website. They retail for $8,999.00 and only 100 were made. You can search for the guitar on the secondhand market via Reverb.

Meanwhile, Cantrell is prepping his third solo album, Brighten, due out October 29th. So far we’ve heard the lead single, “Atone.” A 2022 North American tour in support of the LP was announced earlier this week, with tickets available here.
