Billy Idol has been forced to drop off his support slot on the first leg of Journey’s upcoming North American tour, as the legendary rocker will undergo surgery for a chronic sinus infection in the coming days. Toto, who were set to open the second leg of the tour, will now be on board for the entire Journey outing.

“I am absolutely gutted that I won’t be able to perform the upcoming dates with Journey as planned,” said Idol in a press release.

Originally, Idol would have opened all Journey dates from February 22nd through April 5th, with Toto taking over from April 7th through May 11th. Now, with Toto on board for all the dates, two additional gigs have been added in Hershey, Pennsylvania (March 4th) and Manchester, New Hampshire (March 6th) — for a total of 40 concerts. Tickets for the two new shows go on sale this Monday (February 7th), while the previously announced dates are already on sale via Ticketmaster.

Idol most recently toured this past summer and fall in support of The Roadside EP, which arrived in September. Around the time of its release, Idol caught up with Heavy Consequence over video Zoom to discuss the EP, his 40 years as a solo artist, and more.

“It was frightening, scary, but also exhilarating,” he told us of his decision to leave the band Generation X and go solo. “I was moving from London to New York, and I knew the punk rock scene. I could meet great people in London, but I knew I could meet great people in New York.”

He added, “I was used to being in Generation X, I was used to writing songs with [Generation X guitarist] Tony James. … One of the reasons I actually went solo is because I was a singer singing somebody else’s lyrics. So, in my solo career, I needed to sing my own lyrics.”
