Documentary Now! has been renewed by IFC. On Thursday (February 10th), the network revealed Season 4 — which they’re somewhat hilariously billing as its 53rd — is already in production and will once again be hosted by Helen Mirren. The show is expected to premiere sometime later this year on both IFC and AMC+.

Over its next six episodes, the Emmy-nominated highbrow comedy series — which has been on hiatus since 2019 — is set to lampoon the fashion docs The September Issue and 3 Salons at the Seaside, sports movie When We Were Kings, and pandemic-era feel-good Netflix hit My Octopus Teacher.

Past seasons have included A-list guest stars such as Cate Blanchett, Owen Wilson, Michael C. Hall, Michael Keaton, Jack Black, Maya Rudolph, and Aidy Bryant, with the full list of guests for Season 4, err, 53, to be announced soon. In the meantime, the Lorne Michaels-produced mockumentary’s first three seasons are currently available to stream via Netflix.

In the interim since its last season, creators Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Seth Meyers have kept busy juggling multiple other projects. Armisen is next set to appear in the HBO Max pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death alongside Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, and recently starred in the posthumous music video for George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” with Ringo Starr and Mark Hamill.

Hader, meanwhile, guest-starred in the penultimate episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 11, playing multiple lookalike characters, and Meyers, of course, has been behind the desk of his late night show.
