The great return of Yeah Yeah Yeahs continues today with the New York City indie stalwarts’ latest single “Burning,” the next preview of their forthcoming album Cool It Down. Update — 9/12: Yeah Yeah Yeahs have now shared a music video for the song directed by Cody Critcheloe. It shows hot tempers during a heat wave, and you can check it out below.

Produced by Andrew Wyatt, “Burning” is pure disco-coated dance floor fuel. It’s driven by a vigorous piano riff, inspired by Frankie Valli’s “Beggin'” as well as Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” The story of the song dates back to a fateful night when Karen O was 19: The vocalist had gone out for an impromptu drink with her roommate, and returned shortly after to find her East Village apartment engulfed in flames due to a candle she’d forgotten to put out. All her electronics, including her computer and cameras, were completely destroyed.

“But oddly enough the items that held the most sentimental value remained intact like sketchbooks, a favorite sweater with hearts across the chest, and photographs,” Karen O writes in a statement. “I had photos of my parents in their youth where the fire burnt around the two of them as if there was some intangible force field protecting them… If the world is on fire I hope the most beloved stay protected and that we do all we can to protect what we cherish most in this life. ‘Burning’ is a song about that feeling.”

Cool It Off is out September 30th via Secretly Canadian, and marks Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ first album in nine years. The trio announced the record in June with the Perfume Genius-featuring “Spitting Off the Edge of the World,” which we crowned Song of the Week.
