Rodrigo was briefly escorted off the stage toward the end of “vampire” when the props on stage began malfunctioning; an electrical error lit up the stage with what looked like fireworks, and a tree and curtain fell to the ground. The singer quickly resumed the show, however, returning with GUTS revenge banger “get him back!” Much like the music video for the track, the pop star was joined by a squad of Rodrigo clones for the performance, who collapsed to the ground at the song’s end to leave only the real artist standing.
Rodrigo was nominated in six categories for the 2023 ceremony, including Video of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop video for “vampire.” The former Disney star made her VMAs debut in 2021 when she performed “good 4 u” while collecting awards for Best New Artist and Push Performance and Song of the Year for “Drivers License.”
The VMAs performance wasn’t the first televised performance of Rodrigo’s GUTS following the album’s release; that distinction instead belongs to NBC’s TODAY, where the 20-year old singer unleashed a ripping four-song set on the early morning outdoor stage last Friday.
