Halloween is a sacred time for those who love to watch scary movies — though having kids might change the equation of what kinds of spooks you put on screen. The best family Halloween movies aren’t going to be found in the slasher section of your favorite streaming platform, after all. Picking out a fright night film appropriate for kids and parents alike takes some extra consideration.
When it comes to movies that go bump in the night, after all, every kid is different. Some are huge fans of horror movies from an early age, some do their best to avoid being scared as much as possible, and some like to tiptoe right up to the point of being thrilled. So, with that in mind, Consequence has curated a list of the 20 best Halloween movies for kids and the family to enjoy together, along with notes on how appropriate each flick might be for certain ages.
Animated or live-action, vintage or brand-new, the below films might stop short of a PG-13 rating, but overall represent a proud tradition of childhood: figuring out how much fun it can be to be scared, while also discovering your own limits. And, most importantly of all, learning that sometimes, things really do go bump in the night — at least around this time of year. Read on for our list of the 20 best Halloween movies for kids and families.
