Drum Week continues here at Consequence with an insightful Roundtable discussion between three of the biggest names in drumming: The Go-Go’s Gina Shock, Quasi’s Janet Weiss, and Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa. Explore all of our Drum Week content for more interviews, lists, and our Modern Drummer giveaway.
No two drummers approach their drums exactly the same way. When we decided to dedicate an entire week to an instrument capable of so much variation in style, genre, and setup, we knew no one could discuss its multifaceted nature better than the people who have sat behind the kit for years. That’s why we polled numerous professional drummers for our list of the 100 Best Drummers of All Time — and brought together three of the artists featured on that list for a special Consequence Roundtable.
For this Roundtable discussion, we’re thrilled to welcome Gina Schock of new wave/punk legends The Go-Go’s, riot grrl pioneer Janet Weiss of Quasi and Sleater-Kinney fame, and Stella Mozgawa of art rockers Warpaint. This trio of drum heroes gathered via Zoom to trade stories, reflect on notable career moments, and share in their excitement about up and coming names like Nandi Bushell and The Linda Lindas.
With varied backgrounds, one thing all three women share is a love for the irreplaceable spirit drumming provides. “Energy is something the music craves,” Weiss says. “I just try to do that — I try to make the music explosive and make it exciting.”
“You just can’t help but be iconic, Janet,” replies Mozgawa.
Adds Schock, “It’s power, man. You sit behind there and we are in such control of everything. We’re the foundation of everything. Everything has to sit on top of us… We set the pace. We gotta be good, or else everybody’s gonna be like shit.”
