Our video interview series Mixtapes! is back, this time with Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale revealing his musical tastes by creating a completely random playlist based on our unvetted prompts.
As the Bush frontman himself phrases it, Consequence put Gavin Rossdale to work in the latest edition of Mixtapes! “I dive in here, find a situation, and basically give you a soundtrack for it,” he gamely explains as he examines our big ol’ fish bowl full of carefully curated prompts.
And Rossdale is equally careful in the curation of his impromptu playlist. Whether it’s putting on some Monty Python to assure his kid a misspelled tattoo isn’t the end of the world (“That’s an opportunity to do a blast-over of black work, which I like anyway”) or spinning “Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty when he finally gets a day off, the rocker knows just what to put on for any given situation.
That includes some real-life stuff, like if Jerry Cantrell loses his voice on their upcoming “Loaded: The Greatest Hits Tour” together (get tickets here), Rossdale is ready to step in for Alice in Chain’s “Man in the Box.” Or if he’s asked to sign a Balthazar still from his movie Constantine, he knows to cue up Dogstar in celebration of co-star Keanu Reeves. (He also still hopes to appear in a potential sequel, saying, “Eagerly looking forward to Constantine 2. I hope that I’m in it, but there’s no guarantee. It’s showbiz, after all — could get fucked.”) And just wait till you learn what the Bag of Shame is that prompted him to name Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family.”
He also selects tracks by Sex Pistols, Underworld, and even “Weird Al” Yankovic, so watch the Bush singer build his mixtape in the video above (or via YouTube). You can also listen to Gavin Rossdale’s full playlist via the Spotify player below.
This interview was captured at New York City’s Kensaltown East, where Rossdale previously joined us for a video Crate Digging diving into essential UK records. Check that out along with all of our other Post-Grunge Week content if you missed it the first time.
