We’ve grown up listening to Nirvana, but how well do you know the man behind the music? In this exclusive Q&A, Rock it Out! Blog host Sami Jarroush chats with Brett Morgen, director of the new Kurt Cobain documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.

Morgen discusses the eight-year process leading up to its premiere on HBO this week, including why he intentionally chose to omit many interviews in favor of archived footage. He also reveals whether there’s an alternate cut of the documentary, the involvement of Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean, who served as executive producer, and what Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic said about Montage that brought tears to the director’s eyes.
