Welcome to the latest edition of Masterpiece Reviews. Once again, we’ve thrown on our favorite velvet robe, turned up the fire, and are here to regale you with stories of the greatest and most classic albums of all time. It’s a fresh, new perspective on why these albums are filed under “M” for masterpiece.
In 1965, Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore cemented the lineup for the band that would become The Doors. They performed regularly at Hollywood, CA clubs London Fog and Whisky-A-Go-Go. It was during this time that they were signed to a recording contract at Elektra Records and would begin work on their self-titled debut album.
Recorded in a single week, the album melds together elements of rock, jazz, folk, and psychedelic music. Morrison’s wild poetry grabs the listeners right from the get-go with “Break On Through (To The Other Side)” and keeps them glued all the way to the screaming, primal conclusion of “The End”.
Eventually, The Doors would go on to sell over 20 million copies and be considered one of the most influential records in psychedelic rock. It has since been selected for inclusion in the Library of Congress.
