It’s a fresh, new perspective on why these albums are filed under “M” for masterpiece.
This week, we’re pulling out Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers‘ 1979 third studio album, Damn The Torpedoes. Produced by Jimmy Iovine and recorded at the legendary Sound City Studios, the juggernaut album pushed the Gainesville rockers out of the swamp and into the next level both commercially and critically.
For seven weeks, Damn the Torpedoes sat at No. 2 on the Billboard chart, only failing to hit No. 1 because of the massive success of Pink Floyd’s The Wall. When all was said and done, the blockbuster album wound up going triple platinum, fueled by hits like “Don’t Do Me Like That”, “Refugee”, and “Here Comes My Girl”.
