Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes sits down with Consequence of Sound’s Editor-in-Chief Michael Roffman to discuss his new World War I epic, 1917. Together, the two chat about how he managed to execute those marathon long shots that fuel the film, how he turned his grandfather’s war stories into a screenplay, and how his work on two James Bond films (2012’s Skyfall and 2015’s Spectre) aided in his direction.
Based in part on an account told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather, Alfred Mendes, 1917 chronicles the breakneck story of two young British soldiers at the height of World War I during the spring of 1917. The two are given the arduous task of delivering a vital message to a British battalion, who are hours away from walking right into a deadly trap: a German ambush that will claim the lives of over 1,600 soldiers.
