Earworms, aka those songs that are annoyingly stuck in your head. In this exclusive Q&A, Rock it Out! Blog host Sami Jarroush chats with Dr. John Ashley Burgoyne, a computational musicologist at the University of Amsterdam, to find out why certain songs prove to be so darn catchy.

Dr. Burgoyne discusses the findings of his recent study on the subject of earworms, which he visualized in the online game Hooked On Music. He reveals what components are necessary for tracks to become an earworm, and why you’ll remember Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” for much longer than Kendrick Lamar’s “King Kunta”.
